Yo, I wasn’t even familiar with this blog before this process started. It’s a video blog and Jay Smooth’s commentaries are intelligent, insightful, well delivered, and funny, as well as all the way around engaging. The video quality is tight, and he also often has good music and other goodies there.
Number 4 with a score of 24.5 The Field Negro

Substantive content with very unique and personalized commentary. This blog is both engaging, thought provoking, and entertaining.
Number 3 with a score of 25.5 Black Looks

Great content that’s well diversified, very strong in-depth personal commentary, and very good use of multimedia.
And at Number 1 with a score of 27 Oliver Willis is judged to have the Best Black Blog because he simply brought all the elements together the best.

This blog brings together a great diversity of content, strong personal commentary, good use of multimedia, a nice bit of humor, and a creative perspective.
The Process
There were 32 points possible. After starting with the 50 highest Technorati ranked Black blogs, we had a popular vote to narrow it down to 20 finalist; from there all 20 blogs were scored on the base of 7 criteria as laided out here; plus a head to head bonus round. I might detail the scoring process and point by point results in another post some time; but y’all don’t want to see that now.
Sorry it was so late in coming. It was a good bit of work, and other stuff came up as far as social action campaigns that were more immediate - you know how it goes.
If you haven’t all ready, you should receive an email from me with the code for posting your winners icon. If I couldn’t find your email address at you blog, I would(will) have commented in a recent post for you to email me.

Post Script
Understand, this is not a list of my personal favorite blogs. The pool of blogs that could even be chosen from started with a subjective measure, Technorati ratings, and then there was a vote to determine the finalist; thereafter I tried to fairly and un-baisedly score based on the criteria. Those in the know can attest that bloggers who aren’t my favorite people made the list. Three of the blogs in the top 10 I’d never been to before this process.

You did great work! Thank you for using my list as the first step in your process. I admit to being surprised by the winner… Oliver Willis!
peace, Villager
I realized about half way through emailing that code out to the winners last night, that even though the post is private and doesn’t show on my site except to me when I’m logged in, if you have a link you can still get here.
I’m surprised by the winner and I was doing the review. The fact is at least based on the criteria and the weighted points he had the best balance of everything combined. A lot of people were good on a lot of things, and then would have a gaping deficiency on one criteria or the other. He really didn’t have any deficiencies.
Hello there!
You have done a wonderful job! Thank you for recognizing the remarkable work of these bloggers!
I have visited all of these blogs in the past…except for two of them!
I will agree that the eight I have visited have produced solid work on a consistent basis!
Peace, blessings and DUNAMIS!
Lisa
All great choices I’ve not heard of Ill*Doctrine either. There are so manyblogs it has to be difficult to figure this out and maintain you objectivty at the same time.
Congratulations to the winners!! There are a couple here that are new to me too, I’ll definitely be paying a visit.
Thanks all.
Yes Cooper, objective was somewhat of an issue. One thing that bottle that up on its own was the grading of each criteria seperately. It’s relatively easy to be objective about that. Then I added up the scores at the end, and got some surprises myself. I was like scooby doo - Uuuhhnnn?
I think when you break things down you get a different perspective, than when you’re just looking at it as a whole.
Hi Yobachi - many thanks as always for putting this award together to highlight our blogs and introduce each other. I tried emailing you at the address you left but got a “bounce back”. My email is: info at blacklooks dot org if you want to send me the code.
Peace and respect
Sokari
