Discussing the Diaspora as seen through an internal Black lens
January 27th, 2010
Y’all remember this gem from the post Katrina coverage?
It’s hard to read the text in this upload of the picture; but next to the Black man he is described as “looting a grocery store”, while the whites are described as “finding bread and soda from a grocery store”; giving us the juxtaposition of Black Katrina survivors being called looters, and white Katrina Survivors “find”ing stuff that doesn’t belong to them; like they “found” the “Americas” when people had already been here since forever.
Here we see in succinct and poignant demonstration how Blacks are characterized disfavorably and demonized in the media; while whites are given beneficial and softer treatment.
This imaging propaganda goes on every day of our lives in this country; building in peoples minds stereotypical and negative views of minority groups.
That’s why you have to watch everything they say about Haiti and Haitians in the post earthquake coverage. Don’t trust the media’s characterizations.
Of course there are those who stand for truth from all walks of life. I’ve got two pieces that give a real recitation of how Haiti has remained impoverished due to the fact that it has been treated as a hated international step child since the day it gained it’s freedom, forced to pay reparations to it’s enslaver for gaining that freedom, evaded and governments over thrown by foreign coup. I’ll post those soon.
