Discussing the Diaspora as seen through an internal Black lens

This is why Julie Myers must go. Not only should she not be confirmed permanently into the position of Undersecretary of Homeland Security in charge of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE); but she should be fired immediately.
I previously brought you the story of Julie Myers posing for pictures with, and awarding a subordinate for showing up to her party in blackface. Now the story has gone quiet; but we can’t let it, as a blatant racist holds the top position of the second largest law enforcement agency in the country.
Myers has served as the head of ICE since January 2006, after President Bush did an end-around Congress and inserted her into the position through a recess appointment. A recess appointment is when the president waits until Congress goes on recess to unilaterally appoint someone he knows he wouldn’t be able to get confirmed by congress; and misuses what is supposed to be an emergency measure. The person can then serve for a year, but after that must be confirmed by congress to stay in the position. Bush’s most famous recess appoint was John Bolton to the U.N.
According to ABC “The employee who wore the costume was not identified, but ICE spokeswoman Kelly Nantel said he was counseled by his supervisor. He was not wearing blackface but makeup that was a darker color than his skin, Nantel said.”
She claims he wasn’t wearing blackface, then she gives a description of him wearing blackface. Oh my bad, I mean brownface; because it wasn’t that dark, so that makes it okay. This type of hairsplitting is despicable.
Blackface by any other name is still racist just the same.
But it’s a shame we can’t see for ourselves as Myers tampered with evidence by having the pictures destroyed. Can you say “cover up”?
There are no news reports in the last week that I could find online, and an examination of both the House and Senate Homeland security websites show no info relating to them doing anything about this; so I called them just now.
Rep. Bennie G. Thompson , black, is the Chairman of the House Committee on Homeland Security. He was on CNN the day that the story broke, expressing what I would classify as reserved concern; but now it’s seems that he’s just moved on.
I called the committee office at 202-226-2616 and he’s met with Myers – okaaaay; but there’s no ensuring investigation and no hearing scheduled, and the guy I talked to doesn’t know what Thompson is planning on doing.
Called Thompson’s office, and the person their doesn’t have a clue, gave me the run-around about how I should talk to the committee office (you know, the one that had just forwarded my call to her) about what it plans to do. I informed her that I don’t need to talk to the committee office about what Rep. Thompson plans to do personally; Rep. Thompson’s office should be able to tell me that.
Call Rep. Thompson and let him know that cowering away from this is not tolerable and that he needs to fulfill his duty, and not just give lip service to this incident. He must oppose Myers confirmation and investigate the culture of racism at ICE (202) 225-5876
Joe Lieberman is the head for the Senate committee. His office outright said he wasn’t do anything. I bet if someone had come to the party wearing a swastika or dressed as a concentration camp survivor, you wouldn’t be able to get Joe Lieberman off your t.v. screen, screaming for Julie Myers head; but on Blackface uuuuurrrrr “skin bronzer”, he’s silent.
Call him and let him know that this is not acceptable and that he needs to take decisive action against Myers, and proactively oppose her confirmation to the head of ICE 202-224-4041
Other recent acts of blackface include PH.D students at Northwestern and football players at Hamline University.
Also last night during the Buffalo Bills/New England Patriots game, I saw white fans in the stands wearing Afro wigs and blackface, uuuuurrrrrr, “makeup that was a darker color than their skin”.
This article gives in depth commentary on the situation, including a history of blatant racial activities within the agencies that now make up the Department of Homeland Security.

this is an excellent review of hateful and hurtful actions taken by the majority. I wear black face everyday of my life and although I have struggled to get an education, andlead a crime free life, these actions make me and people like me unable to be taken seriously because we are in black face.It demeans our accomplishments because we are considered a joke to the majority and they are the ones hiring
Thanks JD.
I agree that this type of action fuels the animus and stereotypical and denigrating views of our people; contributing to dirt to the uphill climb we have.
Amazing. Please stay on this because hopefully photos will surface from that despicable woman.
Hell, she got confirmed as the permanent head about a month and a half after this. I don’t think the pictures ever surfaced, and the media apparently completely moved on within a week, so there’s not a good likelihood anything will come out unless someone with some evidence starts feeling vengeful for some reason.
