Juries finds Walker, Poindexter guilty in West Palm Beach Dunbar Village rape case

WEST PALM BEACH — Just before the verdict Friday, a murder of black crows flitted outside the courtroom’s windows, filling the gray sky.

Nathan Walker Jr. sat alone, save for his defense attorney at his side. None of his parents or many siblings were present.

Defense attorney Robert Gershman said earlier in the day that Walker realized that a reckoning was coming.

And it came with the crows.

Jurors convicted 18-year-old Walker of 11 felonies in the brutal attack on a Dunbar Village woman and her son, including burglary, kidnapping, five counts of sexual battery with great force, and the savage act of forcing the mother and son into sexual acts together. Jurors acquitted him of three other charges.

Just hours before, co-defendant Tommy Poindexter’s jury had made a decision similarly swift and split. They convicted 20-year-old Poindexter on eight kidnapping, burglary and sexual battery charges, but acquitted him of five others, including forcing mother and son into sex acts.

Walker, Poindexter and a third young man who has already pleaded guilty, 16-year-old Avion Lawson, face sentencing Oct. 13. All are looking at possibly spending the rest of their life in prison.

Attorneys for the men, Public Defender Carey Haughwout and Robert Gershman, declined to comment until after sentencing by Circuit Judge Krista Marx.

The verdicts come more than two years after the attack by a gang of as many as 10 men and boys upon the woman and her 12-year-old son within their public housing complex apartment. They forced themselves inside, demanded money, then sex, then poured chemicals on the woman and her son.

I continue to be flabbergasted that people feel such sympathy for these guys getting their just due, and pretending like they’re “precious” little kids:

The juror also saw Poindexter as a human being.

“It was very difficult at times, honestly, I had to fight back tears for him. He’s 20 years old with his whole life ahead of him, but yet it’s ending,” the juror said. “I wish they all would have had a better opportunity in their lives.”

Unbelievable. These deviants weren’t simply hungry, impoverished youth hustling to eat and pay bills. First they robbed another poor person in their same situation; then they gang rapped her. Yet still, getting off wasn’t enough for them. They made it as humiliating as possible, then forced her and her son into incest for their perverted enjoyment, and then tried to formulate chemical weapons to attack them with.

His life is over at 20, damn right; and good thing too. The last thing we need is a monster like him running around, lacking any empathy or humanity.

This bull about opportunity is just a bunch of bleeding-heart jive. You don’t need any opportunities in life not to be patently evil. You don’t need material possession not to gang rape and enjoying forcing incest between a mother and child.

Sure, depressed living conditions breed desensitation to violence to a degree, but this is far beyond the pale. This wasn’t violence for survival, or necessitated by the normal plagues of the street life, this was horrific violence for enjoyment.

I hope they all hang themselves in prison so we won’t have to pay for their keep for 60 yrs.

I know this sounds harsh but I can’t help it.

While it would be easy to demonize these young men, these men are simply reflecting in action the wickedness and cruelty of America, of the network of communities in which they were born. the comments of some of their neighbors about the rapes revealed the intense degree of alienation and lack of empathy plaguing the ghetto: one project resident asked a reporter ‘who cares?’ Demonizing these boys without attacking the Hell in which they were bred is dishonest. And that Hell is brilliantly American; all Americans own that Hell and Rich Americans sustain it. Because Capitalism is Criminal, Crime is rampant within Capitalist culture, a culture of deep alienation and cruel inhumanity.

I pray for the rape victims, the tortured and terrorized mother and son; I also pray for these young men and their mothers and fathers. As infinitely cruel as their crimes were, nobody deserves Hell, because our cruelty is always a symptom of some personal or social dis-ease which is out of our control (look at child vs. child rape in some war torn countries around the world). The question should be ‘what personal and social dis-eases are at work in the Dunbar Village case and how can they be cured??’ The only other option is to judge criminal people as irredeemably cruel, drop them in Hell (prison or the projects) and throw away the key. That would be impossible, since God redeems all it’s children, returning them to it’s heavenly bosom, even the so-called infinitely wicked ones.

It’s easy to demonize them because what they did was wholly, and inexcusably demonic; reflecting who they are on the inside: capricious, cruel, sociopathic, empty shells.

Don’t give me the communities of which they were born in crap. There are millions of people who are born into this same shit and don’t give in to this level of unabashed cruelty; and others who are not born into such conditions who exhibit behavior that is the same. It’s a choice of who you decide to be.

This wasn’t selling a rock to a willing buyer to put food on the table, or to pay the rent. This was cruelty for the sheer joy of cruelty.

the comments of some of their neighbors about the rapes revealed the intense degree of alienation and lack of empathy plaguing the ghetto

I’ll give you that. Still doesn’t excuse these individuals in the least.

Demonizing these boys without attacking the Hell in which they were bred is dishonest.

Using the hell which they were bred in as an excuse that necessitates their behavior is 10 times more dishonest; for again, plenty of people come from the same and don’t choose to be the same.

The conditions and causes of these conditions need to be strongly and forthrightly dealt with, and called for what they are; that doesn’t though provide mutual exclusivity to individuals who commit such heinous acts from being strongly dealt with for their chosen actions.

I hope they rot in hell. They are not men or boys they are pigs. There is no excuse to justify this type of behaviour. They will get what’s coming to them in jail. Well deserved.
