Discussing the Diaspora as seen through an internal Black lens
September 12th, 2007
Syracuse University Professor Dr. Boyce Watkins has combined forces with Marc Lamont Hill of Temple University to seek disbarment proceedings against the District Attorney in the Jena 6 Case. Reed Walters, the DA in the case, has been under fire for his handling of the case, involving an alleged assault of black students against white students.
In regard to DA Walters telling students that “I can end your lives with a stroke of my pin, Dr. Watkins says “It’s wrong for a DA to come in and talk to kids who have not yet committed a crime and make that kind of threat. Then, for him to file an outrageous charge of attempted murder against these students after the next fight in the case says that he had it out for these kids. That represents a gross abuse of his power as a prosecutor.”

I’ll soon have some intriguing insider information of Reed’s history of prosecutorial misconduct, from a native of Jena. Stay tuned.

The Aphrosphere Jena 6 Coalition has participated in sending another open letter to Louisiana Governor Kathleen Blanco, this time specifically about insuring the protection of September 20th marchers; the day of Mychael Bell’s sentencing.
It reads in part:
It is now apparent that there will be a massive and historic march on Jena, Louisiana on September 20, to protest the persecution of Black youths in Jena for attempting to integrate the “white tree” at Jena High School. One observer suggested that as many as ten thousand marchers, perhaps including the Rev. Al Sharpton, chanting and demanding “Justice for the Jena Six!”
If so, since the city’s entire population is only 3,000, there is the very real prospect that the number of marchers may exceed the city’s population by a factor of 3 to 1 or more. This presents a public safety challenge that the Jena, Louisiana police, fire and ambulance departments may be unable to meet constructively, particularly in light of the city’s notorious antagonism to Black people.
The Coalition is calling on Governor Blanco specifically to guarantee the safety of the marchers who will march on Jena on September 20.
Thanks to Francis Holland for putting that together.

The prosecutorial misconduct is a nice way to put it. I’m sure he has quite a history of it if anyone cares to look, but I have to say I am applauding wildly. When you consider a good part of the population in this country is down at the school the minute a teacher says one little negative thing about their child I am surprised this asshole’s conduct was overlooked…
opps not so much it is Louisiana after all.
Looking forward to more.
I don’t think it is overlooked so much as it is encouraged by the town, according to my source (because he goes after the weak and the marginalized); and the State is disinterested.
Yobachi, Maybe the pelting from the rain and winds of Hurricane Humberto will pound some sense into Jena.
Someone needs to tell Gov. Blanco: “Let my children go”.
LOL, let my people go for real. I think I’m going to put that in my next letter to her.
I thought animals such as Hitler, Sadam Hussain and Bin Ladan were as bad as they come but it seems this Jena,LA, District Attorney Reed Walters and Judge J P Mauffrey have topped even these low lifes as being as low as they come when it comes to the cruel and harsh treatment of African Americans. However I am a firm beleiver in these words, YOU WILL REAP WHAT YOU SOW’ all all you racists whites. A burning hell awaits you. This DA and this Judge are not fit to hold office, there proably members of the KKK,and it the Govenor does not step in and do something about this situation I do hope she will be put out of office when election come about. My prayers for the JENA 6 AND FOR MY BLACKS BROTHERS AND SISTERS IN JENA, keep your head up because ‘GOD IS WATHCING ALL OF THIS AND VENGENCE IS HIS sayeth the LORD!!!!!
Unfortunately, Govorn Blanco has already announced that she will not run for re-election, so we won’t get to punish her in that way.
Well..are these students totally innocent? They did nothing that was against the law? Wait..didn’t they gang jump another person (forget the color…whether the victim was Black or white, their actions were unlawful.) So quit this disgusting “race” issue and focus on their actions. I applaud the judge for doing what is lawful, and not bowing to pressure. Maybe it’s time for these young people to start being made aware that there are consequences for their actions. Maybe they will stop killing each other, and innocent peopl, too. Just look at the school shootings…appalling..and so much in line with these young people who have grown up in a society permissivenss, no consequences for actions, and blaming others for their own behavior. Enough is enough..and it is totally NOT about race!
The charges and punishment have to fit the crime asshole. The prosecutor doesn’t have the right to mischarge a case. If someone committed one crime, the DA doesn’t have the right to charge them with another. It’s unlawful and unconstitutional.
