Discussing the Diaspora as seen through an internal Black lens
July 10th, 2009
I was watching some classic tv show theme song videos and came across the following comment on this Amen vid; and thought it made for a good commentary for the blog:
Damieandark:
The 80s for most of you was a time of youth so its natural to see through rose tinted glasses in reality though 2009 is probably the greatest time in human history you have longer better health, numerous educational options,a more connected world through the net and other technologys and a far better overall standard of living.
Here’s my response, slightly re-worded:
There’s certainly a certain element to the fact that everyone tends to cherish their own youth more; but nonetheless I say it was a better time.
At least kids still had their innocents then, and quality was still the standard in entertainment. Things were still being created instead of like now just being rehashed.
Now kids from day one grow up on a huge dose of rated R movies, bitches and hoes music, and watered down, assembly line, and CGI stuffed music, movies, and shows; not to mention internet porn of the most demented kind (not to say that there was none of this at that time; but they’re engulfed in so much more of it, especially at much younger ages).
They’re so jaded from the get go!
It’s all about what you cherish.
Yeah, we’re more electronically connected; but so what? All this connectivity; yet, war, famine, and genocide haven’t subsided and inch; and people walk over someone laying on a convince store floor dying. There’s hardly any community about us. So how much is it really worth?
I remember being in the cafe during college eating and we were talking about how kids don’t even really ride bikes anymore. Of course they do; but the point was how minimal it had already become compared to when we were kids; and we were only like 19/20 year olds at the time.
Not to try to portray the 80s or whenever as some Utopian time, it was FAR from it. Just, for all the technological advancement, there’s a lot of sociological and inter-personal deterioration.
What say you about it? Weigh in for me.

I cannot help but feel sorry for the children. They only have a few years to be children , not understanding that they will have the rest of thier lives to be adult. The 70″s and 80″s were good times, we still had dances played basketball at the parks not concerned with being shot if we won and made the other team look bad. The times do chamge and to be honest most familys dont even take the time to sit bown and have a meal togther.
There is a movie called ” when we were colored “, I wonder if perhaps we were not better off when we were colored? There a lot of us who dont even want to be Black anymore.I believe we have allowed the T.V. ,gangster music, define who we are . We are not europeons and not matter how we try and live like the Euros’ we are still holding ourselves back, killing each other. We are even becoming scared of each other.
I remember watching when we were colored way back when.
Speaking of not sitting down to have a meal together, I know families where nights on end no one even cooks. Everyone just gets there choice of take out, and puts together some processed meal, or fixes there on little thing. Its crazy.
