March 24th, 2008

Today, Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy charged both Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick and his former top aid Christine Beatty with a combined 12 count; some individual and some collective.

To get some background on the Kirkpatrick scandal, you can read here.

The once, so-called “Hip Hop Mayor”, who I could hardly believe the people of Detroit reelected after his incompetent, embarrassing, self-serving, and to me, clearly corrupt first term; has recently faced a 7 – 1 vote of no confidence by the city council in which the council has asked him to step down. He also lashed out at the media, blaming the press for all of his misbehaviors and bad fortunes, while taking no responsibility for his in explicable and inexcusable acts.

After giving a civics lesson on honesty and perjury in her press conference this morning; Prosecutor Worthy asked rhetorically, “Can we charge perjury, yes. Are there other charges and offense, yes…Should we charge, yes.Today we have filed a 12 count indictment…” The pair, Kirkpatrick and his former aid Mrs Beatty were charged with:

Count 1 Conspiracy to obstruct justice a 5 year felony

Count 2 Obstruction of justice 5 year felony

Count 3 Misconduct in office

Count 4 a second Misconduct in office against Kirkpatrick only

Count 5 Kirkpatrick only, perjury in a court proceeding 15 year felony

Detriot Mayro Kwame Kilpatrick and Christine Beaty

Count 6 second perjury for lying in court “by testifying that he did not have romantic or sexual relationship…” with Beatty

Count 7 perjury against Christine Beatty by saying “Garry Brown was not fired for investigating the Mayor…or that she did not know Garry Brown was investigating Mayor”

Count 8 second perjury against Beatty only, a 15 year felony, for lying about the relationship with Kilpatrick

Count 9 third perjury count against Kilpatrick for perjury in other than a court proceeding for falsely swearing to a notary public

Count fourth perjury against Kilpatrick, also for other than a court proceeding for falsely swearing to a notary public. Both are 15 years felonies

Count 11 & 12 against Christine Beatty only, also for also for perjury other than a court proceeding for falsely swearing to a notary public

“This is an extremely sad day for the city of Detroit and the county of Wayne…but we are not going to deny true justice to anyone”, said Worthy after introducing the prosecution team.

Worthy said with authority that they “fully expect that the defendants will turn themselves in by 7am” tomorrow morning. “If they do not turn themselves in, we will go out and arrest them.” She continued that, “We are ready to go. Any delays on this case will not come from the Wayne County DAs office; we’re ready to roll”.

Arraignment of Kilpatrick and Beatty is scheduled to be in 36th District Court on Tomorrow.

Fox News made sure to note that he is the “hip-hop mayor”, not their words, but Chris Rock’s words.

Was Chris Rock on, or were they calling themselves just quoting him?

Why do politicians come with all that extra stuff? Go into office make a difference in the community and get out. Why start acting up and doing dirt? For all that stay a regular person on the street and do it. You’ll save people a lot less pain.

Associating this dude with hip-hop reflects poorly on the community. I’m sure no one will go looking for hip-hop to denounce this dudes deeds in office.

Urban Thought, they do it because they don’t care. All their actions are for themselves.

In a world of ego maniac politicians, Kwame Kilpatrick is a King.

But they primarily do it because we let them. Actually we encourage them, as is the case here. There was no reason Kwame should have been voted back into office. The fact that the people of Detroit did vote him back into office was a clear signal to him and other Detroit politicians about how they should behave.
