Discussing the Diaspora as seen through an internal Black lens
August 3rd, 2008
Darrell Green, and FINALLY Art Monk of MY Washington Redskins both went in today.
Maybe going against one another as corner back and wide receiver in practice each day for years helped them both out.
I’ve been a skins fan since ‘87.
I was living in DC, a 3rd grader as my dad, a then Major in the Air Force, was assigned to the Pentagon. I lived on Bowling AFB for anyone that matters to.
I attended school at Amidon Elementary; a couple of miles from the Capital. For D.C., the skins are like a college team. The fandom their is so rabid that the school systems crossing guards handed out redskin football cards to us after school. I still have those cards somewhere in a shoe box 20 years later.
When the Redskins made it to the Super Bowl in January of ‘88, and not so known Doug Williams from Grambling University was given the start as the first Black quarter back to start a super bowl; I was over run with excitement. Matter of fact the feeling of the time was much like when Obama won the Iowa Caucus. Williams would quarter back that team to a super bowl victory; with Darrel Green at corner back, and throwing a TD to his starting wide receiver Art Monk.
I’ve been singing Hail To The Redskins ever since.

Man, you took me back in time. I saw a special on Doug Williams on ESPN not too long ago. I, too, am a Redskins fan. Bet I know what you’ll be doing this coming Monday night.
Thanks for the memories.
No doubt, though I’m pretty sure that game is Sunday Night.
Nice to know you’re a skins fan.
I used to be big on football; still can enjoy it depending on my mood. I was really a big 49er fan especially when Rice hit the scene (him being a Mississippi boy and all) However, I do remember watching Doug Williams. Back when black quarterbacks were about as rare as a one-legged man in an a## kicking contest. I’m glad your guys got in….Thanks for taking me back to 1987. It was a great year for me.
Peace…
Roschelle
I am willing to give you Darrell Green and Art Monk in this years Hall of Fame. However I am a diehard Cowboy fan and I’m glad Michael Irvin and Troy Aikman made it in first. I look forward to meeting you guys this year in our division matchups. Hope your still smiling after we finish waxing that A$#$$$$$.
Yes, it’s tonight. Duh.
Roschelle,
LOL @ “one-legged man in an a## kicking contest”
That is an apt description.
I hated the 49ers in the 80s and 90s; but I have major respect for Jerry Rice; easily not just one of the greatest wide receivers, but greatest players ever!
My mom’s side of the family is from Mississippi and most went to Jackson St, Alcorn, or Mississippi Valley.
We were Bears fans (my other favorite team) because of Walter Peyton coming out of the HBCU tradition (JSU).
My parents, myself and two sisters graduated from Tennessee State University; and hence I’m waiting for Ed “Too Tall” Jones and Richard Dent to hopefully go in.
Donald,
Aikmen was obviously going in, and as much as I hate the Cowboys, I was glad to see Irving get inducted because he deserved it. Despite what he did off the field, he brought game on the field, and if not top 10, is definitely a top 20 all time receiver.
I enjoyed his induction speech last year. I loved the humility.
And as I mentioned above, I’d love to see Cowboy, and fellow alumnist of mine Ed “Too Tall” Jones get in, though he probably won’t.
And y’all can forget giving that ass-kicking, and prepare to receive it.
D.
Now we both know the redskins are no match for the COWBOYS. I don’t want you to get your hopes up to high just to be let down. Remember the feeling that you had last year?
