Invisible Black Women Pt1: Dunbar Village and Stepha Henry

September 24th, 2007

Black women under attack and no real media attention.

Security Guards at Dunbar
Despite a rash of rapes in the area, and other general violence, the city of West Palm Beach doesn’t want to bother to provided security in their run down projects (aka concentration camp) that are Dunbar Village.

WEST PALM BEACH — The city is poised to pay for security officers to continue patrolling Dunbar Village, a day after West Palm Beach Housing Authority officials said their own money for the security would run out within about two weeks.

If approved by city commissioners on Monday, $40,000 in forfeiture money — cash seized by police that was involved in criminal acts — would be used to pay for the officers, including one private security guard and one off-duty police officer.

The money would pay for security for 13 weeks.

“We’re absolutely delighted,” housing authority Executive Director Laurel Robinson said.

Dunbar Village was the scene of a gang rape on June 18 involving a mother, her son and as many as 10 attackers.

Mayor Lois Frankel said she asked Police Chief Delsa Bush to put together a security plan shortly afterward, and Bush’s decision to use the forfeiture money was a result.

But Frankel wouldn’t guarantee that the city would spend more money on the security after the 13 weeks are up.

“The question becomes how long should we sustain security at this current level?” she said, adding that it’s important to spend it now because of the “inflammatory nature of the crime.”

When Dunbar Village had private security in the past, there were at least as many calls for police service as there were after federal money for the security ran out.

“Inflammatory nature of the crimes”, is she serious. Inflammatory is when somebody says somethink politically incorrect. This was a horrific, barbaric attack using rape as a weapon of terror; like in Darfur

In regards to the last paragraph, maybe that just shows that having fake security and just going through the motions doesn’t work - That in order to have effective security you have to actually put forth the effort to develope and excute a viable security plan.

The Latest news on Stepha Henry…there is no latest news; nobody gives a damn - and hence there’s no investigating or reporting going on as far as I can tell.

I wanted to be fair before posting the above words so I called and the Miami-Dade police and checked.

That space between the last sentence and this one was all the information they had - nada. You don’t believe me, call and ask them yourself 305-471-1900.
