Is BET Discriminating Against Black Women

August 13th, 2008

It’s been a hard week for the females.

First some blogger rankings had me asking Are There Any Good Black Female Bloggers

Then we had a little girl who was deemed Too Ugly To Appear On Stage At Opening Ceremonies of the Olympics

Now sistas might be being kept off a “Black” network???

    Written By SOHH’s Streetz:

There’s a new report out that isn’t the best for the struggling BET network. Could the station that is supposed to cater to the black community be slowly veering away from black women as hosts in order to remain completive with other networks?

A new report has emerged that alleges that the network that’s brought us such landmark shows featuring all black hosts like “Video Soul” and “Caribbean Rhythms” is starting to focus non black talent because apparently black women aren’t viewed as marketable. Allegedly: Black executives at the network don’t think an African-American woman can sell a show and non-black women are laughing and joking that they have a better opportunity for employment at the network than African-American women.

    Sharon Carpenter of BET
    Sharon Carpenter

This unconfirmed yet shocking report doesn’t seem SOHH far fetched if you look at all of BET’s current female hosts. Sharon Carpenter, who is half Indian and half White, has been given a show to host (BET News). Rocsi, the co-host of 106 and Park is of Honduran decent and Julissa, the host of the now defunct “College Center” was Puerto Rican. At the present time there is no all black female currently hosting any BET program.

If this information comes out to be true it will irreversibly damage the already struggling network and could be the start of a bunch of lawsuits.

    Story developing…..

I am shocked that some black folks find BET relevant for anything other than criticism.

It’s relevant in that its a vehicle through which poor self imaging is proffered to young Black folk who do watch the network; and may be taken by those with limited contact with the Black community as representative of who we are.

It’s also relevant that a network that was built up on the viewer-ship of the Black masses ditch most of its initial core audience that it got paid off of, like a brotha who goes and gets him a token white women as soon as he makes it; yet still bears our name - Black - though it doesn’t represent us.

I think a lot of us just assume it change it’s name and not purport to represent us if it’s not going to do at least a decent job of it.

    D. Yobachi Boswell, thank you for your eloquent response. Last time I checked it was still called Black Entertainment Television for a reason.

We should not let this situation die. How insulting this is to all of us black women. I have two daughters and I won’t allow them to watch BET. Anyone who works there should hand their heads in shame. I’ve seen Rosci in action a couple of times on 106th and she’s been a joke since she’s been on. She’s always tries too hard to “sound” black. BET just go out and hire the real thing! I’m not familiar with the other women who were mentioned but I goggled them both. Real interesting to see Sharon Carpenter doesn’t have a problem with black men because she’s all over them on her web-site!

I think we should all help BET to die by writing to our cable providers and asking them to switch BET for TV on the basic cable channel, so more people will have TV One instead of BET.

This has been a suggestion for a year now from others; but nobody has stepped up to lead it as a campaign.
