Is Robert Mugabe Stealing the Election

April 3rd, 2008

Once a heroic liberator, now a tyrannical despot; Robert Mugabe has taken his country of Zimbabwe from independence to ruin, as he’s done whatever it took to hold on to power for 28 years.

Now his time has run out. His party has admittedly lost the parliamentary elections; but he seems to have rigged the results to say that his opponent in the presidential race didn’t get 50%, forcing a run off which Mugabe can then also rig. It’s as if he gave the people a bone by letting the parliamentary results mostly stand; but he’s not going to let go of his own position.

Zimbabwe opposition leader insists he has defeated Mugabe in presidential election

HARARE, Zimbabwe (AP) — The main opposition leader insisted Tuesday he has won Zimbabwe’s presidential election outright and denied persistent reports he was negotiating to ease out President Robert Mugabe, who has led the country from liberation to ruin.

In his first public comments since Saturday’s election, Morgan Tsvangirai said he was waiting for an official announcement of the results from the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission before he would enter any talks with Mugabe.

A businessman close to the state electoral commission and a lawyer close to the opposition said earlier the two men’s aides were negotiating a graceful exit for Mugabe, the country’s leader of 28 years. Both sources spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue. Several diplomats said they had heard similar reports of secret negotiations but could not confirm talks were under way.

It is so sad what is happening in Zimbabwe.

When I think of Zimbabwe, I too think of Bob Marley and that concert.

    Wishing you well

Well, they have a chance to start again.

They seriously need to revolt if Mugabe tries to steal the election. It’s now or maybe never to loose themselves from the grip of despotism.

Quite a bit has been reported on the BBC about this…not so much on the mainstream, that I have seen.

A question for you: Do you think Obama will develop some sort of committee or plan to address what is often overlooked, relations with African states and their inclusion in the world economic affairs, other than their natural resources?

There needs to be some dialogue and better discussions about this largely untapped and underdeveloped area. And whether certain diplomatic and democratic ideals are ever possible on the continent.

I must admit ignorance to the successes of African countries, but I think it is a conversation the US of A has long since ignored. (And can we do it without coercive and manipulative Capitalistic-heavy tactics?)

I’d like to here your take.

I don’t know what Obama will do as he is almost completely hushed mouth on Africa, which suggest not much.

I think he has an elevated personal interest in Africa, and he’s a politician and acts like a poitician, so I don’t have high hopes that he’s going to do significantly more since most American’s (including Blacks) don’t care about Africa, and he seems particularly concerned about pleasing most Americans.

There is the decent possibility though that he’s just keeping hushed on it because it doesn’t win him any points to talk about it during the election, so he might as well not say anything and then just do what he’s going to do when he gets in; but I’m not going to exactly hold my breath expecting a politician to do the right thing.
