Is There A Proxy War In Somalia

August 27th, 2007

This article from Allafrica.com suggest that there is; at least there is according to Eritrean officials who “scorn” the U.S. for wanting to add Eritrea to the list of states that sponsor terrorism.

I’ve thought the Ethiopian presence in Somalia to be a good thing, as Somalia hasn’t had a stable government for a decade and a half; and Ethiopia was establishing some order and providing some security. Further, I liked that it was an African nations as opposed to Western nation - Africa handling the problems of Africa.

Also if Ahmed’s assessments are correct then the United States, via Ethiopia, in overthrowing the Islamic Courts Union, which had established a government; the US overthrew the will of the Somalian people. If so this would be another in a long line of America overthrowing foreign governments and installing puppets for it’s own benefit; which has led to much of the despising feelings towards the U.S. around the world, especially in Islamic countries.

I’m not saying I cared for the Islamic Courts Union; but self-determination is the natural right of any people.

And What the Hell - Going To Sudan for Refuge???
allafrica.com/stories/200708221002.html

Apparently so. While Sudan has spent the last decade first slaughtering its citizens in the South and now in the Eastern Province of Darfur; causing millions of Sudanese refugees to flee into neighboring countries; Eritreans have been seeking refuge in Sudan.

Talk about irony.

Speaking of Darfur, Last week I put up the letter I wrote to HBO urging them to air Sands and Sorrow now!

    D,

I usually don’t comment on blogs, but you seem to be sincere in your cause, and the Darfur issue that I follow closely. So here goes.

Eritreans find it sad if not funny with being listed as a state sponsor of terror.

“Eritrea Could Teach U.S. Much to Combat Terror” is what Rumsfield has to say in 2002, as Eritrea on its own was fighting Bin laden and his gang crossing from Sudan trying to cause chaos between cohesive christians and moslems.

Eritrea is not denying that it is helping the moderate ICU as they represent the real Somali people, as you already might know it is doing more than any other African nation to help the various Darfur faction representatives.
Eritreans from experince try to help the voiceless, as they exactly know how it feels when you have a right on your side but the world does not want to listen.

This latest accusations is based on the widely discredited UN report that accused half a dozen countries including Eritrea sending 2000 soldiers, when Ethiopia and America rolled in, they were no where to be found.

Some general article to explain what really is going on somalia.

The situation between Ethiopia and Eritrea is mainly to do with their border and a small town. The boundary was decided by the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague and the town was given to Eritrea.
As Ethiopia did not like the finaly and binding ruling it would not give the town back, breaking International Law. In all this the US was the main arbitrator, but because some other self interest it chose to do nothing for five years abdicating its role, thus alienating Eritrea.

There is a huge ruckus going between Congress and the current administration on the relationship between
    Ethiopia and US.

This is what Sen. Pat Leahy has to say.

Mr. President, during the Cold War we supported some of the world’s most brutal, corrupt dictators because they were anti-communist. Their people, and our reputation, suffered as a result. Now the White House seems to support just about anyone who says they are against terrorism, no matter how undemocratic or corrupt. It is short sighted, it tarnishes our image, and it will cost us dearly in the long term.

So I hope this gives you more info that is not available in the general media to help you open your eyes.

Simon, thanks for your substantive and insightful response. Are you Eritrean yourself?

Rumsfield, Chenney and the like are ALWAYS self-contradictory. They routinely say one thing one day to support a particular position, then say the exact opposite the next to support another position; as is the same with American foreign policy. I keep a picture up in my office of Rumsfield smiling as he shakes Suddam Hussein’s hand in his Bagdad palace back in the 80s to remind myself of this.

I personally don’t really care if Eritrea helps the ICU because the country needs some kind of stable, credible (with the people) government, but what makes you say they’re moderate?

“Eritreans from experince try to help the voiceless, as they exactly know how it feels when you have a right on your side but the world does not want to listen.”

That’s a great position to take.

On your last statements, it’s not that my eyes aren’t open, it’s that I don’t always have the knowledge based to know what’s going on at a particular moment. As I follow many political issues and happenings both domestically and internationally it’s hard to always stay up on the detail of each one; especially things that aren’t covered in the mainstream media that you have to spend a lot of time drudging through the internet looking for information on.

That’s not enough time in the day to do all that reading, but I try to do as much as I can. Thanks for the info.
