Discussing the Diaspora as seen through an internal Black lens
February 10th, 2010
So the twitter world, and looks like much of the blog world is flipping out about Singer John Mayer stating that he isn’t attracted to black woman. I couldn’t care less who he’s attracted to or giving the bone to.
It’s a little disturbing, though, to look at the terms in which he expressed his preference.

In a just released Playboy interview, Mayer says this:
PLAYBOY: Do black women throw themselves at you?
MAYER: I don’t think I open myself to it. My d*ck is sort of like a white supremacist. I’ve got a Benetton heart and a f*ckin’ David Duke cock. I’m going to start dating separately from my d*ck.
I don’t know if he thought he was funny, or he thought he was making clever and witty analogous refences; but one wonders why he’d want to associate himself with white supremacy and KKK Grand Wizard David Duke in any respect. Especially, wondersome since he then goes on to lists off Black women that he finds “hot”. Which then suggest that its not a lack of physical attraction; but other reasons why he’s not “open” to Black women. Which reasons may or may not be fine, but if he’s going to speak on it, he ought to just say whatever the real is, and stop with the nonesense.
But giving him the benefit on that one dissipates when the more important quote comes up, that I would think would be garnering more attention than who he wants to stick it to.
MAYER: “I am a very…I’m just very. V-E-R-Y,” Mayer said. “And if you can’t handle very, then I’m a douche bag. But I think the world needs a little very. That’s why black people love me.”
Someone asked me the other day, “What does it feel like now to have a hood pass?” And by the way, it’s sort of a contradiction in terms, because if you really had a hood pass, you could call it a nigger pass. Why are you pulling a punch and calling it a hood pass if you really have a hood pass? But I said, “I can’t really have a hood pass. I’ve never walked into a restaurant, asked for a table and been told, ‘We’re full.’”
I don’t even know what that means. What the hell does he even mean to be saying? All I can tell is that he processes the hood to be where the “niggers” dwell.
Johnny boy got some serious ’splainning to do.
The Life Flies is calling him the “white Kanye West”. Mmm, maybe so.

Update - John Mayer apologizes on twitter 6 mins ago:
Re: using the ‘N word’ in an interview: I am sorry that I used the word. And it’s such a shame that I did because the point I was tryingto make was in the exact opposite spirit of the word itself. It was arrogant of me to think I could intellectualize using it, because I realize that there’s no intellectualizing a word that is so emotionally charged.
So is he going to go to racism rehab now like that Krammer guy did after his “nigger” tirade, and every celeb does after they fowl up in whatever regard [Tiger Woods sex rehab for instance]?

1)First, I appreciate his wit and sense of humor, and it was quite funny to me. He thinks in metaphors and analogies, which is what makes his music good.
All he was saying, is that he’s attracted to black women, but it has never been sexual. He compares his “peen” to a white supremacist, because his “peen” gets in the way of his intellect and his ability to blindly date. I think the analogy was dead on, and funny. White supremacist discriminate on an ignorant basis, and him not dating black women is because of ignorant reasons, his “peen”…clever
2) If you don’t know what the second quote means, how can you be upset.
He’s not saying to have hood pass is to be like a “nigger”. He’s saying to have “hood pass” means you get to use the “n-word” around black people. That’s what he felt the interviewer was really asking, and then he flips it and says, how can he have a hood pass, if he doesn’t even know what it’s like to be black in America. He’s mocking the very absurdity of the question, and this idea of “hood pass”.
In other words, he saying what the hell does that even mean.
How can he go to racist rehab when he wasn’t been racist. He also explains it in the apology. It was trying to say the opposite, and say that “hood Past” is ignorant.
I need to proof read, twitter makes it hard to write in complete sentences.
What I meant to say was:
“How can he go to racist rehab when he wasn’t been racist. He also explains in his apology his intentions. He was trying to say the opposite, and infer that “hood Past” in and of itself is ignorant and offensive.

Guy is an idiot and tool attempting to be cool. He owned himself. It is true most “celebrities” fuck up, claim a substance abuse problem, then hit rehab. I think a lot of them do stupid shit purely for attention then use rehab as an escape from the consequences.
Hey Yo! Long time.
Wow. Is this T. Jefferson reincarnated? Can a woman be bothered? I am bothered that he compared his dick to a white suprecist. Humor or not. Good humor is based in the truth. The truth should not be comparing any part of him self to people who lynch and haze blacks. I have a right to tell him I’m bothered. If I get one more comment that says, give him a chance people make mistakes….. Forget that. I can’t. This is just a bad look for Mayer.
So, I’m happy his preference is not to mess with black woman sexually… let the other races have his idiocy.
@MrsGrapevine, clearly you’re a fan; and I think most people’s natural reaction is to defend someone they like. I see it over and over and over again. People’s fans scarcely have a word of criticism for them no matter what they do: see R. Kelly, Michael Vick, Sarah Palin, etc., etc…
I’ve always liked John Mayer [though I'm not all into him like that], so it’s not as if I’m some hater who’s taking advantage of an opportunity to take a shot. Further, I’ve never fallen into the notion that liking someone means you have to like everything they do.
Metaphors are great, but it depends on what you use them for, not the simple fact that you’re able to use them. So he’s intelligent, great; he’s also clearly an ass that he would invoke the Klu Klux Klan and take on the mantel of white supremacy in order to make a point about a lack of interest in black people.
If Kanye said he didn’t like Jewish women cause he has a Hitler dick, game would be over for his career.
Further, giving white people a pass not only to throw around “nigger”, and not in a quote, is not a good look for black folk. Stop excusing this nonsense. Even he’s now admitting himself it was wrong, and you’re still saying it’s okay. It’s NOT.
Like Mayer is saying himself, you can’t intellectualize this crap. I don’t care if he’s not really racist; like with Bill and Hillary during the election, his willingness to use racsim for a joke at our expense at best makes him a fuctard.
Further, the fact that he doesn’t hate black people, doesn’t mean he doesn’t have some messed up attitudes with his “Black People love me” comment being vary pretentious, and seemingly paternalistic.
I can be upset about the second quote because that racist stupidity doesn’t make any sense. It’s not my job to be able to decode his tomfoolery, its his job to make sense and not to throw around “nigger”.
@Yurdad I agree with everything you said. He let his belief that he had a hood pass [which he didn't, most black folk don't even know who he is] get him into trouble.
He needs to stop trying to be cool and humorous for awhile, and maybe shut the fuck up.
@Shyla, good to talk to you again.
The whole “people make mistakes” thing is a complete B.S. copout. It’s what all apologist say every single time about every single situation. Yes, people make mistakes, and people should be called out for those mistakes, and held accountable for them.
And of course you have a right to have a problem with it and say so. I mean evoking the Klan and white supremacy in his sexual opinion towards Black women, when such entities and theologies are responsible for mass rape and subjugating sexual servitude of Black women, is quite disturbing. The fact that he thinks it’s funny is quite disturbing. Likewise, Black people giving him the okay because “it’s a joke”, is quite disturbing.
I was actually pretty blase’ about it all when I wrote this post, but the doldrums of excuse making and ridiculous apologizing, and even villainizing of the people who dare to have the slightest critique of what he said has made the situation worst.
Dude F—ed up. He might not be a terrible person, but what he said wasn’t okay; and people should just acknowledge that.
@ Yobachi:
1) I haven’t purchased not one single album from John Mayer. So please don’t use the fan defense to minimize how I feel.
2) Racism implies an intent, and some level of maliciousness. He was not calling black people the “n-words” or using it to demean a race. The simple use of the “n-word” doesn’t make it racism. Like he said he was trying to intellectualize the word, but not everyone is intellectual. Most people don’t even understand what he way trying to say in the first place, and they are still outraged. Once they actually read the quote, they feel his assessment was right on. He could have done it without using the “n-word”, but why should he? Because he’s white???
3)You admitted that you didn’t know what he was saying, and stilled called him racist. You defended Jeremiah Wright to the core when he called Hillary the “N-word”, and used it to describe Barack Obama. It’s a double standard, and when Jeremiah Wright used it, it was demeaning. He could have easily said, black man. But, it’s okay because he was using it as symbolism? Or because he is black?
4) I need black people to make up their minds.
Is the word offensive or not? Black people use the word in an offensive manner, and it’s quite sickening. They’re certainly not using it to demonstrate the ignorance of the word, but to propagate the negative stereotypes associated with the word.
5) Everyone is upset about the “n-word” and totally missed the misogyny. The way he talked about Jessica Simpson and Kerry Washington was out of line. Which goes to show, sexism is perfectly acceptable within our society and the black community. I will agree with sexism. John Mayer is a womanizer, and a known womanizer.
6) When David Chappelle does it, it’s comical genius. When John Mayer does it, it’s racism.
Kanye West game was over for telling the truth. We were outraged at the time, but months later we realized he was telling the truth.
Kanye gets in trouble for saying controversial things all the time. So probably not a good example.
Lastly, I’m not excusing anything. Trips me out, that if people don’t agree with your point of view, they condone or make excuses for it. That’s high school, this is suppose to be an intellectual conversation.
Obviously there is no absolute moralism on the “n-word” because it’s acceptable if rappers use it, but not if rockers use it. It’s acceptable if young ignorant people who have never really experience discrimination use it, but those who are trying to explain it’s offenses can’t. Makes my head spin, the tap dancing people use to justify when the “n-word” can be used. Sorry, I just can’t keep up with the rules. Perhaps no one should use it, and that will also kill all the confusion wouldn’t it.
He didn’t admit he was wrong for the way he used it. He admitted that the word was emotionally charged, and therefore caused a reaction he wasn’t expecting. He also admitted that it wasn’t his intent to be hurtful or racist, but the exact opposite. But of course, you skipped over that part.
His interview was offensive, but not because he used the “n-word” or David Duke analogy. Ironically, you excuse sexism, right?
This guy is a D*CK! His music is okay but if you ever listen to him for more than 5 minute interviews I always get the feeling he thinks of himself as a wise gift from god. Maybe it’s just me but I feel I see through his self serving act of being “a laid back zen type”, he just rubs me th wrong way. He is full of “it” and himself!
@ MrsGrapevine “…and stilled called him racist.”
No, I factually did not! Not one time, anywhere.
“Is the word offensive or not?”
We’re not a monolith. You cannot apply what other black people do, think and say to my positions.
“Ironically, you excuse sexism, right?”
Ridiculous statement. Where did I excuse it?
“His interview was offensive, but not because he used the “n-word” or David Duke analogy.”
Yeah, you’re not excusing or defending. A rose by any other name, still smells the same.
@KimNorth, I’ve never listened to or read an interview of his before, because I never cared. I tried to ignore this for the first few hours on Wednesday; but being on twitter it was nonstop until I had to weigh in.
“I see through his self serving act of being “a laid back zen type” ”
Yeah, it seems like his persona is all a big show. He seems to want to apparently portray himself as above it all, and wants to talk crap; then cry when he gets called on it.
