LaKeesha Alert - because Black People should be found too

May 18th, 2008

You’ve heard of the Amber Alert; the federally funded system created to alert the public of when children go missing.

Well apparently, as I and other Afrosphere bloggers have noted; when Black people go missing, apparently mainstream America and it’s media doesn’t get the memo.

Mr. Hustle Knocker says “Let’s face it. The Amber Alert only works for the Ambers of the world.

What missing black girls, boys and women need is their own alert system—one that’s more sensitive to their unique needs…

Presenting the Lakeesha Alert.”

Click it and see…

Note: Hustle Knocker came up with and made the button, I just added the mock up page to link it to.

I notice for certain the media do no cover anything but blond girls ages 12 to 22 - at least for the most part. That should be someting that the press is hounded on constantly.

As far as Amber Alert - I don’t think, and please correct me if I’m wrong, that there is a difference. Is there not a specific criteria the Justice Department has for entering an Amber Alert into the system, reasonable belief of abduction, imminent danger a decided my law officials and enough of a description of both the victim and the perp to issue the alert… something like that.

If there is indication that Amber Alerts are not issued - by following those terms - for POC, or that they defy the terms for little white blonds and enter them anyway even if they do not meet the criteria, that would be another thing. Is that what you are saying?

If that is the case, if they are not following the same guidelines for the issuing of the alerts, that would be horrific. I just can’t help but think or at least wish the Justice Department would in some way be aware of this.

Yes, the Amber Alert has specific criteria; and what I’m saying is that which situations/who meets the criteria is a judgment call by the people who are in charge; and their judgment sucks!

An example is in the Chioma Gray case as posted about here: www.blackperspective.net/index.php/chioma-grays-mom-upset-over-lack-of-police-help/

Further, while I agree that Blond, white and attractive tends to be what the media covers even as it relates to white people (as I noted in this article: www.blackperspective.net/index.php/invisible-black-women-pt3-have-you-seen-her/); white and ugly has a better chance of coverage than anyone Black.

Quite frankly, I don’t think there’s any lack of awareness; there’s a lack of give a damn. Even major media have done stories on major media not giving the same coverage to people of color as they give to white and attractive; and yet they still keep doing it.

That is what I wanted to know. If that is the case then it is more than a medial problem, it looks like a huge problem which needs to be addresses with the Justice department as how else to you get to all the agencies to which the criteria applies. Something has to occur in this case at a much higher level as this is not one of those cases where you can change anything fro the bottom up. A full blown campaign on this issue is needed.

Yobachi - saw this a few days ago . Thanks for linking up the alert button. I plan to post it on SjP’s.

Based on news reports coming from your city, it seems that 911 continues to be a joke in our town!
