May 11th, 2010
This is a monthly series at BlackPerspective.net. Beauty in our country and in world culture is most often measured through the lens of white men; here we’ll take a Black perspective on beauty. Beauty comes in many forms, and we will highlight some various different types of beauties.
Alicia Keys was our last Beauty of the Month
Lena Horne was a trailblazer and principled activist. She’s a true Legend, and with her passing yesterday, Lena Horne is this month’s BlackPerspective.net Beauty of the Month.

Lena Horne was born on June 30, 1917 in in Brooklyn, New York.

“Coming from a family with a mixture of African, European, and Native American descent she joined the Cotton Club at the age of 16 and later toured with Noble Sissle’s Orchestra and Bandleader Charlie Barnet. Later she went on to replace Dinah Shore as the featured vocalist on NBC’s popular jazz series The Chamber Music Society of Lower Basin Street.” - EntertainmentandShowbiz.com

During the 50s Horne was blacklisted from Hollywood for her civil rights activities and she resumed her nightclub career. In 1957, she recorded the live album, “Lena Horne at the Waldorf-Astoria,” which became the largest selling record by a female artist in RCA’s history.
Horne realized she was able to achieve her success in the entertainment industry, because she was light-skinned and blessed with looks that white people found non-threatening. “I was unique in that I was a kind of black that white people could accept,” Horne once said. “I was their daydream. I had the worst kind of acceptance because it was never for how great I was or what I contributed. It was because of the way I looked. - Chattahbox.com

You may want to change her date of birth. I was born in 1970 and I couldn’t have possibly accomplished as much as Lena without a time machine ! I miss her already. Such class.
