Discussing the Diaspora as seen through an internal Black lens
October 29th, 2008
As a kid, even just watching him play on t.v. I was scared at seeing his eyes get big starring across the line of scrimmage before the snap. I can just image what quarterbacks were thing starring at seeing that live, knowing what was coming at them. Singletary was always intense, a ferocious hitter, and always locked in.
Well he locked in on Vernon Davis and his 49er team after losing in his head coaching debut. Davis had slapped at the chin and face mask of an opposing player, costing the niners a 15 yard penalty.
Singletary says: “Our formula is this…we go out, and we hit people in the mouth; number 1” – he says matter of fact-ly. THAT’S IT! That’s why I love Mike Singletary; because that’s what football’s all about first and foremost.
You’ve got these finesse teams, with the Mike Martz mentally and personality, when you let someone like him be a head coach; who think they can put on a Cirque du Soleil show and that’s good enough. But any thing and everything else you do in football starts with controlling the line of scrimmage and the trenches, and imposing yourself on your opponent; because if you’re getting pushed around the field, you can’t do all that high flying flashy stuff. You bust somebody in the mouth; you can do what you want.

Lovie’s coaching style is vastly superior to either Mike–Singletary or Ditka. And, I have no doubt that, given a choice, most players would prefer to be coached by someone with Smith’s temperament.
Personaly I wouldn’t. Lovie’s threw away last season on some inexpliciable attachement to Rex Grossman. An attachment born out of tolerance of a quarter back who’s so undedicated and hence mediocre that he gets a 0 passer rating in a game because he was admittedly more interested in getting ready for New Years Eve party’s than for getting ready for the game. And then thinks that’s a good excuse to tell people for why he played so terribly.
I prefere a guy with some passion for the game, and will hold my teammates accountable. There’s nothing worst than being on a team where you as a fellow play either have to be a parent or watch things just fall apart. I’ve been there.
Plus, last I checked it was Ditka and Singletary with the super bowl rings, not Smith.
Lovie’s is a fine coach too, but I don’t see where you get “vastly superior” from. Actually, I don’t even know how this post became a competition between Ditka/Singletary and Smith.
Ditka has one ring. Singletary has one as a player but none as a head coach. My bet is that Lovie will get his before Mike S. and that he may get more than one.
I agree with you about Grossman but nobody’s perfect.
I think Singletary really did himself right. If anyone is going to hire a coach to be a babysitter to another man, then they got the wrong coach. SF better work on getting the right players (and keep Samurai) to remake that franchise. (I LOVED the 49ers so much as a kid in the 1980’s, I sent my defensive schemes and offensive plays to Bill Walsh…NO reply, I guess they weren’t all that hot.)
Weighing in on Chicago: I always knew Rex was overrated due to being in a pass-happy Florida offense with tons of talented WRs. His problem was always a fear of pressure, making poor judgments under pressure, and relying on the deep ball to bail him out. He’s a broke QB that will be lucky to latch on somewhere else.
I’m Purdue biased here, but Orton showed he could handle a tough situation from day 1 as a rookie, with Mushin Muhammad still on Rex’s jock. Now, Orton did show immaturity with the drinking thing, however, he was 22. Having to just not make mistakes is often a good way to learn in the NFL. (With the ability to make just 2-4 good plays per game to win.)
As a byproduct of last season, I think Kyle learned a hard lesson. No one wants to throw away a season, but they wouldn’t have won anyways with a QB or not. (But I still think they need to draft a developmental QB to let Kyle know they aren’t just going to give him a free pass…big contract or not.)
This season they better get pressure on the QB and a secondary that stays on the field (with the guys off the street almost), or else Orton will be throwing 45 times a game. Forte: the guy got burnt to a quick, and then teams said, “Let Kyle beat you.” So far, Kyle has figured it out.
ALSO: Urlacker is done within 2 seasons. He’s no longer capable (back problem) of being a grade A linebacker. Put Briggs at MLB and roll out.
Chicago Bears rant complete.
Nice change-of-pace running Yobachi.
