Discussing the Diaspora as seen through an internal Black lens
April 7th, 2009
According to a March 31st News Channel5 article:
Reports released Tuesday said nearly a third of those who live in Tennessee have been without health insurance since 2007.
Last year the hospital absorbed $70 million in unpaid medical treatment. As a result Nashville General had a $3 million deficit.
Officials said the hospital serves more than 30 percent of Nashville’s uninsured patients, which most agree was the reason for the hospital’s deficit.
In response to the possible closing of the Hospital, which is also the teaching facility for Meharry Medical College (which trains more black doctors in the U.S. than any other school); there is a “SAVE OUR HOSPITAL” campaign being mounted.
A link sent to me last night led me to a website containing the following information:
Urgent!!! Metro Hospital needs your help!
“SAVE OUR HOSPITAL” is a campaign to secure Federal Funds for Metropolitan Nashville General Hospital (MNGH). MNGH is the only hospital that citizens of Nashville Davidson County can go to in spite of their economic, employment, or ethnic status. In these harsh economic times we must do all we can to secure the necessary funding so that Metro Nashville General Hospital can continue to operate as a fully accredited, in patient facility.

NASHVILLE METRO GENERAL HOSPITAL IS OUR CITY’S SAFETY NET FOR ACUTE CARE MEDICAL SERVICES!! This Campaign is as much about the kind of City we envision Nashville to be, as much as it is about our concern for the least and vunerable members of our community . A city that do not take care of its sick is a sick city. We believe Nashville is much better than that!!
We want to hear from you, and we need your support. You can support in the following ways
1. Host a information meeting for the purpose of educating folks on the issue and getting folks to sign cards or to volunteer.
2. Support a public display of community support by attending the MAYORS BUDGET HEARING, Wednesday, APRIL 8TH AT 11 AM [it's been changed to 8 AM by the Mayor's office] in the Mayors Media room.
3. Contact Congressman Jim Cooper’s Office at 615-736-5295. Give your name and address. The reason why you are calling:
* We need you to find the federal dollars now to keep our Metro General Hospital open as fully accredited high quality safety net hospital
* Due to the increasing number of layoffs, we as hard working Nashvillians are losing our insurance.
* It is important that we fully fund our high quality safety net hospital now so it will be available for all of us during these economic times.
