President Obama, Keep Your Word On Darfur

February 21st, 2009

As I stated back in my October 3rd article Biden Says Yes ‘We Can’ Have A No Fly Zone In Darfur:

When asked in the debate if Americans have a stomach for boots on the ground in Darfur; which is a false question because almost no one is asking to necessarily put American boots on the ground, but for the U.S. to provide military support and so on to African Union boots on the ground; Biden responded:

“I don’t have a stomach for genocide when it comes to Darfur. We can now impose a no fly zone, it’s within our capacity. We can lead NATO if we’re willing to take a hard stand”. He then continues to explain about how we can provide the helicopters in support of AU troops.

STAND’s website
states that, “Specifically, Obama has promised to discuss Darfur in talks with China and to provide the necessary logistical support to UNAMID, the joint United Nations and African Union peacekeeping force currently on the ground in Darfur.”

The authorization for intervention was given a year and a half ago. The countries that voted for it, including the U.S. at President Bush’s direction, simply haven’t followed through on what they voted for.

UNAMID’s own site states that

A joint African Union/United Nations Hybrid operation in Darfur was authorized by Security Council resolution 1769 of 31 July 2007…authorized UNAMID to take necessary action to support the implementation of the Darfur Peace Agreement, as well as to protect its personnel and civilians, without “prejudice to the responsibility of the Government of Sudan”. UNAMID formally began operations on 31 December 2007.

The African Union troops need more military assets and some air cover; they’re providing the troops. This is plenty doable. It’s not that hard. The world just needs to step up to it’s commitment, and Obama needs to quickly begin to follow through with his.

Thank you so much for this! I also have been drafting, redrafting a written letter for Obama on Darfur. I will be calling the White House switchboard. I didn’t even know that was an option!

I will definitely do my part to keep him accountable.
