Press Advisory On Tonights Return Of Dog The Bounty Hunter

July 16th, 2008

This was sent to A&E and media outlet this morning.

Dog The Bounty Hunter

Afrosphere Action Coalition Worldwide Web – July 16, 2008
Press Advisory

After contacting the A&E Network and some of its advertisers about the return of Duane “Dog” Chapman’s show “Dog The Bounty Hunter” to the air waves, the Afrosphere Action Coalition released a statement on June 17th “expressing our
dissatisfaction with the network’s decision”. In anticipation of the
planned return of the show, we also hosted the Day of Blogging for Respect in Media: www.blackperspective.net/index.php/afrosphere-action-coalition/day-of-blogging-for-respect-in-media/

A&E’s regrettable reply was predictable and dismissive. Nonetheless, the AAC and our constituents remain undeterred in our opposition to the shows return as “Dog” has never owned up to what he actually said, nor demonstrated any change or shown action to make amends; but instead simply put on a PR show with the desire of maintaining commercial viability.

As the new season of “Dog The Bounty Hunter” airs this
evening, Wednesday July 16th the AAC will be monitoring the program for those advertisers who have chosen to put their brands at unnecessarily risk by propping up the position of a public figure who engages in racial denigration; after which we will continue to alert the broader public about those who choose to stand for respect of all peoples in media, verses those corporation standing simply for what they perceive will advantage the bottom line, above all us.

The AAC has and continues to “urge A&E in the strongest terms to reverse course and withdraw their support for Duane Chapan and the Dog the Bounty Hunter show. Until A&E does so, we have no alternative but to inform the viewing public and urge them to withdraw support from A&E and its advertisers. If Duane Chapman had come clean about his racial demeaning behavior and attitudes, thereby demonstrating real sincerity towards actual change, perhaps there may have been a place for him again in the public square. But on the record A&E has set before us, he has simply gotten a vacation and we cannot accept that he is again receiving a platform and further financial reward.”

Kudos to you for your efforts to prevent this raging racist from being aired on A&E. I never did like him anyway, though unfortunately I’m not surprised that A&E is supporting his show considering who really controls that station. I haven’t watched that channel for a long time because of how it’s changed it’s programming and how it has digressed from the original concept. His show is not artistic in the least and I consider it an insult to the basic ethics and sensibilities of most people who are ethnically mixed. Again, it comes down to the bottom line( ratings and profit) and obviously, the board of directors don’t care about the people who are insulted by even looking at that idiot and crew, let alone giving them air time. I want to ask anyone a few questions ,#1) why your group does not believe Dog’s apology , I saw him when he was on Larry King show when he apoligize by using the N word. I do believe he was sincere. #2) Why is ok for a black person to used the N word amoung them self and a friendly manner or an a fight and any other race is not ok especially when they are famous. #3) Why Groups like this are encouraging the public to stop watching or listening the programs ,when any body is entitled off making their on choice.
If I hear someone saying anything that is offencive to my own kind if I don’t like it I won’t watch it or listen it, Am not going to tell everybody to stop watching the show belive me I’m a minority.

Tony, Speaking for myself I’ll try to answer those questions
#1) I don’t think he was sincere. Considering that he was trying to threaten his own son about his girlfriend telling people he called blacks the “N” word. He was more honest in the tape than he was on Larry King. It wasn’t like the word came out accidentally. It’s a regular part of his vocabulary. He’s racist trash that made money operating outside the laws.
#2) Speaking for myself as a black man , I don’t think anyone should use the “N” word period. Especially not white people who have historically used the word to degrade us. Until we are equal in all facets of American life that word should be off limits. Ask yourself this , why do white people want the right to call us such a hateful word just because there are those of us that use it ? It’s still a slur that Dog admitted using regularly.
#3) Because as Americans, we have the right to protest and get in touch with sposors and boycott policies and things that offend us. It worked during the Civil Rights movement and money is where it’s at. If you like the show that’s your right, keep watching it. I consider it racist garbage you’re making excuses for. The sooner it’s off the air the better.
