Protect America Act Is A Con

The Bush administration uses terrorism and 9/11 to create a Boogeyman justification for all of its warrentless wiretapping and data mining and spying on Americans.
The fact of the matter is that warrentless spying was begun by the Bush administration almost as soon as he took office, at least 7 months before the September 11th attacks; proving that the warrentless wiretapping that was initially uncovered had nothing to do with the need to rapidly respond to 9/11 to prevent more attacks as claimed by the Bush administration; but was a power grab and frontal assault on the constitution and our freedom
This article details how the Bush administration went to the telecommunications industry to get American’s phone calling info months ahead of 9/11.
This article details the NSA’s comprehensive spying from the time Bush took office.
This is why the Protect America Act that expired the week before last should be allowed to die; and why the House leaders must be both implored to maintain the protection of the Restore Act (sponsored by Reps Reyes and Conyers) and reject amnesty for the criminal telecoms that violated well established law and the constitution.

You can call or email the Democratic House Leadership. Here’s a letter that I’m sending, feel free to use it in whole or in part:
Senate democrats have already sold the people down the drain in giving amnesty for Corporate Telecoms crimes. An act that if passed would also virtue end investigation into illegal spying by the Bush administration and government culprits.
The democrats as a whole have again and again given lip service to protecting civil liberties; but then voted to shred the constitution through patriot act spying and informant powers and through the various updates to FISA and the Protect America Act.
The House leadership and individual House members are being given another chance to do the right thing and turn back the tide of increased and unconstitutional usurping of power to the Executive branch and to the government in general.
Uphold the Fourth Amendment. Don’t negotiate amnesty for crimes by the rich and powerful, don’t negotiate more warrentless wiretapping powers, and make sure all the protections of the Restore Act are apart of any spy bill!

Would you say that these offenses are impeachable?
Absolutely, they couldn’t be more impeachable. At this juncture it’s almost a moot point with the election coming up, and Cheney being the guy behind him. He should definitely be prosecuted out of office though.
Though didn’t Bush alread pre-pardon himself or something?
Will they impeach? I doubt. They don’t take notice, rather, they don’t take the public seriously. Perhaps, the feel no one does follow up on what you say versus how you vote.
Who really cares about impeachment, that’s not the issue (for the reasons I enumerated in the above comment). Stopping spying and maintaining the constitution is the issue we need to be addressing.
And democrats in the house will listen if they think that voters will turn on them and they will lose their newly gained power.
They have simply taken Orwells Animal Farm and put it into practice.
Haven’t read animal farm but I hve read 1984, and much of it has come to pass; much more of it is on the horizon, and we sit back and do absolutely nothing about it.
I know that’s right. Folks have to wake up. In addition to the wiretapping, there’s intel that confirms insurance was taken out for the towers that went down right before they were taken out. Too much coincidence= Noncoincidence.
The national apathy needs to be checked. If we are all active enough to at least fill out petitions and do just a little research and sharing of actual non-corporate influenced news, we can prevent alot of these blatant attacks on ‘liberty’ from happening.

Already did. I get signed up for the email alerts of several decent grassroots organizations and fortunately they dropped this gem and some related opportunities to take action. I also caught a post from Modern Musings reminding us to contact John Conyers office.

Another thing, we need to keep contacting them. I’m contacting them twice a week. I’ve been calling 2 or 3 of the house leaders at a time; then emailing all of them.
I’m actually going to fax them instead of email them this week, because I know for instance Steny Hoyers emails bounce back.
