Discussing the Diaspora as seen through an internal Black lens
May 21st, 2008
The Dallas Morning News has done a story on the issue, and now The Atlanta Journal Constitution today has done a story about the Dallas Morning New’s story; so I will publicly address the situaton.
To note, we have been in vigorous discussions at the Afrospear about this since the day the State Bloggers Corp to the Democratic National Committee Convetion (DNCC) was announced last week.
Yesterday and this morning, as Lead Coordinator of the Afrosphere Action Coalition, I’ve sent letters to Nancy Pelosi, Chair of the Convention; Natalie Wyeth, Convention Communications Director; and Aaron Myers, the conventions Internet Director, as well as to the credentialing office. I also tried to put in some calls this morning, but the DNCC was not answering their phones.
While I will not at this time disclose the specifics of that letter, let it be understood that an offer of resolution has been made, and not simply just a complaint, nor bashing. An offer of resolution which does NOT including taking away credentials from anyone who has been awarded them to award to someone else.
Nonetheless, a policy that makes for dozens of white operated blogs being allowed access to the convention floor; but almost no Black or other POC blogs having that same privilege, is not sustainable and will not be accepted by Afrosphere bloggers. This is the issue, and not the side distraction specifically about who is a state blogger. The issue is whether or not a representative number of Black Blogs will be allowed access to the convention floor, as dozens of white operated blogs will be.
We await the DNCC’s response and resolution to this problem.
To make the issue further plain, there are two groups of credentialed bloggers to the DNCC. The State Corps which will be allowed on the convention floor, and the General Corps which will not be. The issue here is exclusion from the floor, and a lack of diverse representation and equity in privileges being received by different demographic groups.

yobachi,
i appreciate you for dropping by and adding your much needed perspective on this issue at my blog.
i really like the fact that you have taken action by contacting the dnc leadership, but i ask that you take it one step further and publish the letter that contains your proposal to fix the oversight in not having any Black bloggers credentialed to sit with their states.
my reasoning is two-fold: (1) others may use your letter as a template to frame a similar letter to the dnc (there’s strength in numbers), and (2) it makes the proposal public, so that your intentions (and the intentions of your group) are transparent and above board.
Hmmm Plez, interesting perspective. Let me think on it a little.
The reason why I did not make the letter immediately public is so that I could speak to DNCC leaders frankly, and give space to negotiate; where we could have an open dialog; but without the specter of public accusation or insult to muddy the waters.
Let me think about it though. Check it, I’ll at least go ahead and post what the proposal for resolution was in a little bit here. It has been about 24 hours since the first letters went out and not even an acknowledgment of receipt and consideration.
