Discussing the Diaspora as seen through an internal Black lens
June 18th, 2008
As reported a couple of weeks ago, Dog The Bounty Hunter is coming back to A&E this summer.
Do you remember Dog’s extremely racist and derogatory rant caught on tape last fall (here’s the short version of the recording if you don’t recall). We’ll, A&E quickly pulled his show for damage control, and as I predicted at the time; it was simply a ploy to let the dust settle, pretend like they did something, and then bring him back.
Afrosphere Action Coalition in conjunction with ConsciousInk has sent a letter to A&E as well as many of its former advertisers (others will still be contacted) to “express our disappointment with A&E’s decision to embrace and facilitate; and it’s advertisers decision to financially support, the return of ‘Dog the Bounty Hunter’ to the airwaves, after the very public revelation of Duane “Dog” Chapman’s disdain for people of color, and lack of reservation with using racial slurs as attacks towards people of African Descent and other peoples who are not of European Descent.
It is our hope that you will consider how insulting his return is to the African-American community, and decide against disregarding how important to both the balance and harmony in the diverse world community it is to remove support of personalities and projects that are racist in nature; and to avoid aligning yourselves with those who project racism into the popular culture.”
Now they need to hear from all of you
You need to tell programming executive’s at A&E that their support of someone with such demeaning views is unacceptable. We’ve also identified some advertisers that we need to put focused intensity on and contact:

The Main Point
We are not trying to punish Dog because he had a bad day; but because he has never owned up to what he really said and the expressed reasons given on the tape about how he uses the n-word and why he didn’t want his son’s Black girl friend around.
Hence, he has made no real amends for what he won’t even acknowledge he did: that he and his crew of convicted criminals regularly used the word “nigger” with derogatory intent. He has not admitted that when his son began to date a Black woman, Dog verbally savaged her simply for being Black and for no other reason. He even initially when confronted with the recording tried to disparage Monique Shinnery’s character to justify him calling her a “fucking nigger” and not wanting her around; when he had already said in the recording that he didn’t want her to catch him using the n-word as being the reason for not wanting her around.
We in the Afrosphere Action Coalition do not believe that Black folks should stand for this type of derogatory behavior, and that they and others of like conscious certainly shouldn’t have our money support companies who support this demeaning behavior towards Blacks in the popular culture.
Because of this lack of making amends, and taking steps to change his attitude towards Blacks and people of color; Dog should continue to be held in consequence if and until he does.
But Dog Sincerly Apologized, so we should just move on
No he did not! He lied about what he said, pretend there was no racial animus, and he still hasn’t owned to what he said and why he said it: www.blackperspective.net/index.php/racist-dog-chapman-continues-to-lie/
He has not demonstrated that he’s done anything to change who he is and how he views and relates to people of color. And I find it dangerous that someone of his views and obvious animosity towards people of color gets to run the streets as a quasi law enforcement agent. We’re refusing to have our money support a racist, and to have t.v. networks continue to disrespect us.
Further, apologizing and changing aren’t nearly the same thing. In what way has he demonstrated that he’s done anything to change? And who cares about him making a fake apology for saying what he meant to say, just so he could save his job and keep making his money?

Yobachi,
I owe you an apology. I didn’t post about this until today. I was caught up in a personal labor battle and it had me going. I posted today and added the link from my blog to yours.
Sorry!
Msladydeborah, better late than never; and this is an ongoing action; so we need to keep alerting people regardless.
