South African Actors ‘Want Hudson Out of Mandela Film’
JOHANNESBURG (AFP)
South African actors want to stop Oscar-winner Jennifer Hudson from playing Winnie Madikizela-Mandela in a new film on the ex-wife of the nation’s first black president, reports said Monday.
The Creative Workers Union of South Africa said using foreign actors to tell the country’s stories undermined efforts to develop the national film industry.
“It can’t happen that we want to develop our own Hollywood and yet bring in imports,” the union’s president Mabutho Sithole said in The Citizen newspaper.
I think Jennifer Hudson would do great in this role, but they absolutely have a point. You just had two Americans play the lead roles in the film Invictus surrounding Nelson Mandela, and now this.
On the flipside it often takes having a star attached to a movie to even get it greenlit to be made, or if made without one, they obviously tend not do as well; so it makes all sorts of sense to have someone like Hudson to get the story told.
I think a proper compromise would to be make sure most other roles in the film, especially significant ones, are played by South Africans. That gives the balance of having both star power, and indigenous people populating the film.

Jennifer Hudson has the role, and will do a great job playing Winnie. I am not made at the SA actors who are hating and mad. Jennifer Hudson is a super star. She is well known internationally. Jennifer Hudson is gorgeous and beautiful. She is amazing, and a very talented young lady. They have a lot to hate on Jen about. Jennifer has truely earned this type of role. She has earned the title of an established actress. How many actors you know still acting have the accolades Jennifer Hudson have earned. People Jen ant going any place, and the role in the movie of Winnie is hers. Jen will do a super job and she will be very well prepared. Haters are always going to hate when there is something great in the works.
