Spike Lee’s Miracle At St Anna Opens Today

September 26th, 2008

Here are some reviews of the film. The first is from Black America Web; and the second is by Roger Ebert (he always does a good job of explaining his the reasoning behind his reviews). I tried to find others from Black reviews but one Black news site after another had nothing, at least not that was readily findable.

I don’t know who Clinton O’Connor is; but I add his in too; though I’m guess by the name that, well…

BAW Film Review: Spike Lee’s ‘Miracle at St. Anna’ Tells the Story That Most Be Told

Somebody has to tell the story.

There is a moment early in Spike Lee’s latest joint, “Miracle at St. Anna,” when an elderly black man, Hector Negron, peers at an old World War II flick on television starring John Wayne. Then, almost inaudibly, Negron mumbles to himself about how black soldiers were over there too — and how “we fought too.”

Roger Ebert review

Spike Lee’s “Miracle at St. Anna” contains scenes of brilliance, interrupted by scenes that meander. There is too much, too many characters, too many subplots. But there is so much here that is powerful that it should be seen no matter its imperfections. There are scenes that could have been lost to more decisive editing, but I found after a few days that my mind did the editing for me, and I was left with lasting impressions.

‘Miracle at St. Anna’ scores for Spike Lee and the men of America’s 92nd

“Miracle at St. Anna” should have been a mess. Spike Lee’s latest concoction is all over the place. It’s packed with multiple story lines, three languages, disjointed eras, flashbacks, flash-forwards, mystical moments, Fascists, Nazis, ancient artifacts, and a murder mystery.

But it works. “Miracle at St. Anna” is powerful, stirring, emotionally taut and epic-sized. An insightful take on racism, brotherhood, and faith, it’s one of Lee’s best films.

I saw the movie this weekend and I must tell you Spike let me down. When I saw the movie stills for the film, I had a suspicion that the large actor would be slow and lack intelligence like Michael Clarke Duncan in the Green Mile and I was right. I don’t want to give away much of the movie , but I would like to hear from those that have seen it. Did it make you see what African Americans experienced during the war or did it reduce many of us to stereotypes ? Consider it when you watch the first half of the movie.
