Discussing the Diaspora as seen through an internal Black lens
December 2nd, 2008
— Today Dr. Susan Rice was announced as both the second African American and second women to hold the position of United States Ambassador to the United Nations, pending confirmation by the the Senate.
President-Elect Barack Obama today announced a number of members of his foriegn policy and national security team. Andrew Young was the first Black UN Ambassador under Jimmy Carter from 1977–1979. Madeleine Albright was the first female UN Ambassador under Bill Clinton form 1993–1997 [Anne W. Patterson was also acting Ambassador under Bush during a transition period for some months in 2005).
Other nominees today include:
Senator Hillary Clinton, Secretary of State
Secretary Robert Gates, Secretary of Defense
Eric Holder, Attorney General
Governor Janet Napolitano, Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security
General Jim Jones, USMC (Ret), National Security Advisor
I thought Dr. Rice might likely get that National Security Advisor position; as she was Obama’s campaign’s Senior foreign policy adviser, so it was plausible that she might transfere into the same position in the white house. Just as, for instance, Robert Gibs was Obama’s campaign’s communications director, and received the equivalent White House position of Press Secretary; so to I looked to see Dr. Rice to pick up the the White House equivelent of her campaign position.
I’m still discussed about Hillary Clinton being Secretary of State though. Just puts an awful taste in my mouth for a number of reasons.
