The New Yorker Depicts Barack and Michelle Obama As Muslim Terrorists

July 14th, 2008

According to Yahoo News

“This illustration provided by The New Yorker magazine, the cover of the July 21, 2008 issue by artist Barry Blitt, shows Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama dressed as a Muslim and his wife as a terrorist. The magazine says the cover is meant to satirize the use of scare tactics and misinformation in the presidential election to derail Obama”

Are they serious? They can’t possibly be that stupid. There’s no way that they think that imagery is helpful to dispelling the Muslim/under cover terrorist scare tactic.

What they really meant to do is to back door that imagery in and hide behind the claim that they are satirizing the scare tactic; but are really meaning to add fuel to it. They’re using the satire claim to try and cover what they’re doing. Or maybe it’s just good ol’ sensationalism. Create a controversy to sell some magazines. But either way, no one with a brain could think that they had any noble intentions with this.

Obama’s campaign set up Fight the Smears earlier this summer to respond to the type of thing this cover seeks to demonstrate and more.

White America is full of it! Their brand of sarcasm and racial humor is nothing new. When generations of bigots teach their children the same, what do you expect? They will tell you to get over it in a heartbeat, then smile in your face and stab you in your back the next day! You see, their collective guilt is masked by a self-pride that verges on insanity. Their perverted minds have blinded many and kept the flame of hate and racism burning in this country. The bible says, in Psalms 37, that soon the wicked will be no more and you will give attention to his place,.. “but the meek and the righteous will inherit the earth.” (quote is paraphrased) Nevertheless, those who continue to assault and humiliate us will eventually get their just due. Let us have the courage, the discipline and endurance to wait on God to exact his revenge upon a crooked and twisted generation that does not know any better, because they never even applied their so-called Christian manners. Despite their claim to know God and Jesus, these Jerry Falwell types will eventually be held accountable for their evil.

I predict that it’s only going to get more racist from this time out. I’d love to have a wager as to which white politician or media personality will call Obama the N word first and then try to make it acceptable by comparing it to hip hop’s use of the word. It will be from now until November.

Actually, these aren’t even the Jerry Faldwell types; these are suppose to be pro-Obama liberals.

They’re supposedly helping him by “holding up a mirror” to the smears.

With friends like these, who needs enemies. This is a situation where you ask someone to please stop helping you.

I find this cartoon humourous in the light of the reporting of the “terrorist fist jab” which this is clearly satirizing. However, that type of reporting can be said to be its own self-satire.

The topic of Muslim extremists and terrorists is too sensitive for most Americans to find funny at this point in history.

Further, this a time when we have a real chance of seeing an African American elected to the highest office in the land. Therefore, the timing of this cartoon is badly misjudged. Black people have been the butt of white so-called humour too many times to expect many of us to be able to smile along with this joke.
