We Marched On Jena

September 21st, 2007

…and it was something beautiful.

WEW!

I got back about 4 hours ago y’all. Soon as I pick up my car from Tennessee State’s campus where we launched from, I get on the interstate and my tire blew out. I was going to still go to work for a half day, but after that I’d had enough.

There was an almost two day period where I only slept for about 1 hour. I finally got in about 6 on the bus last night (well mostly in the morning) but I’m still sleepy and beat.

I’ve spent the last hour checking in with national and local media, but I’m going to get a few zzzzzz then come back and write about things.

Also, if y’all heard about the nooses hanging from the truck last night in Alexandria Louisiana, I was there. We were waiting for our buses to pick us up to go back to Nashville when those chumps came through; but I’ll tell you about it when I wake.

    Yobachi,

I definitely hope you get all the rest you can. I would love to hear your thoughts on the event as you experienced it (after you get your 12 hours, of course).

I’m glad you went and hopefully this will get things out in the open. I am rather disappointed however to see that for all the big talkers there was no help for bail. I think the platform is needed I just think that put up or shut up is something I have to say. I know many people have donated individually at color of change but I’ve seen very little help in the way of money to make bail from those with the largest of mouths making me at times question the motive. To seize upon anything without actually making that thing relevant in this case by focusing on at least getting the money to get Bell out of jail disturbs me. Am I missing something here?

I cannot believe that in this country people are allowed to display hangman’s nooses in such an anti-American fashion. The idiots in the pickup truck should, at the very least, face disorderly conduct charges.

And I cannot believe that they can keep Bell behind bars AFTER his case was overturned. Are there any charges still pending against him? He’s been in jail how long now? He should face some consequences for drop-kicking the idiot Justin Barker, but comon now… this is just plain ridiculous. Whatever happened to equal protection under the law?

This country has all those military people fighting for “freedom” in Iraq, but that concept seems to have by-passed Jim Crow, LA.

Yes there are charges still against them. That’s what I’ve tried to get people to understand from day one, and told them not to celebrate too much his conviction being overturned.

His conviction in adult court was vacated, but he is still under indictment and can be retried in Juvenile court. He was originally put in jail based on the indictment and that stands. You can be jailed pending trail of indictment.

What’s puzzling is if he had a bail amount in the first place, and then it was lowered, why is he not being allowed to pay that bail and leave. I’d be different if he was being held without bail; but he has a bail, so we is he not allowed to pay it and go.

Hey Cooper, as I we were boarding our bus to leave Jena, and I was looking for one of my bus mates by the court house while Jessie Jackson was doing his usual; there was a real estate agent out there who had a PA system and he was collecting money for bail. At that time 16,000 had been raised.

The money for his bail is there now, if it wasn’t before Thursday. For some unknown reason that no one is explaining, they’re not allowing him to pay it.

I will be calling his lawyer tomorrow morning to try and find out. I called him last night, but my call didn’t go through. I don’t want to alienate him by calling him today on Sunday.
